Pichai addressed the recent concerns regarding problematic text and image outputs from the Gemini app in an email to staff on Tuesday, initially reported by Semafor and verified by Google. “I’m aware that some responses have offended users and displayed bias – let me be clear, this is entirely unacceptable, and we need to rectify it,” he stated.

The glitch in Gemini’s image generator poses a setback for Google’s AI endeavors, as it strives to compete with rivals like Microsoft, whose Copilot AI tool offers similar capabilities. Last month, Google rebranded Bard, a chatbot introduced a year ago, as Gemini, presenting the updated product as its most advanced AI model yet.

Maria Curi, a tech policy reporter for Axios, noted, “Tech companies claim to subject their models to rigorous safety and ethics testing.” She added, “However, the discovery of historical inaccuracies raises questions about whether these models are being deployed prematurely.

In his memorandum, Pichai noted that Google employees “have been diligently addressing these concerns, working tirelessly to rectify any issues. We’re already witnessing significant enhancements across various prompts.”

He emphasized, “AI isn’t flawless, particularly given the nascent stage of the industry’s evolution, but we understand the lofty standards set for us and remain committed to the task for as long as necessary. We will conduct a thorough review of the situation and ensure comprehensive remediation.”

AI-driven chatbots are under scrutiny for their potential impact on the upcoming U.S. elections.
